Summer of ‘08

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

I realized that the longer we go between posts, the harder it gets to post, so here’s a kick in the pants. Shorts, rather, because the heat is here.

We went to Miles’ last day at St. Andrews last week and this weekend we watched baby Miles videos. That made me both happy and sad… happy to know we have great footage of Miles, the tiny-husky-sweetie; sad that that era is over.

Both boys are growing at an alarming rate. Miles looks like a 16-year old, and Kai could pass for a long-retired senator, if not for his stature. They are as cute as possible, individually and as a set.

Anyway, we’ve decided to roll this blog into one about both boys. As soon as we get it together! (You would think 2 second children would do a better job documenting their second child.)

Chocolate

Jessica taught Miles the joke that chocolate milk comes from chocolate cows.

This morning he told me that we get chocolate from killing cows.

Cultural Competence

Monday, November 5th, 2007

This past week we encountered some “teachable moments” with Miles when it comes to cultural sensitivity. We realized we need to be a little more proactive in exposing him to different people. The great thing about this city is its diversity. We need to seek it out more!

At Costco we were in the bread aisle with a Muslim family. The mom was in full hijab including a facial veil. As we walked by, Miles says quite loudly: “She’s a ghost!!” (Cringe.)

Later at Costco we were in line in front of a Japanese family. The mom was speaking in Japanese to her son. Miles was listening intently and then began to chatter along with her… in gibberish. that’s what it sounded like to him. He was just imitating her. (Yikes.)

At a restaurant, a young black man with hs hair cornrowed in to thick cornrows walked by our table. Miles pointed and yelled, “Look! He got Halloween hair!” (Ouch.)

In the toy aisle at target Miles asked for a specific fire engine for “Harmonica.” He meant Hanukkah. (Oy Vei!)

The leg bone’s connected to the butt bone…

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Miles got a lollipop in his Halloween bucket that was candy mounted atop of a plastic leg and foot skeleton. I think Ron ate the lollipop off of it and left the “stick” on his desk. We noticed Miles playing with it this morning near Kai. After I took Miles to school, I went home and changed Kai. Imagine my surprise when I opened up his diaper and found the leg bone making an indentation in his tiny little buttock!  A place for everything and everything in its place.
