I think this was one of the hardest decisions we have had to make lately…but we went ahead and did it..We had Miles’ hair cut. Really short. Ron got his hair cut really short last week, so Miles was kind of in to the whole idea. His hair was looking really cute. It was about 5-6 inches long over his head. I had been twisting it, but the level of maintenance was extremely high. It was requiring me to sit with him for about 2 hours every other weekend to twist it, plus about 10 minutes a day for moisturizing and more for washing and styling. This degree of work is just not easy with a three year old active little man and another one on the way. Plus, some of his twists began to lock up in the back in to very skinny locs that couldn’t be combed through. We decided to just cut it off and start over.
We went to the barber shop and they took out the clippers and just buzzed his little ‘fro right off. It was so hard to see all of his beautiful little curls all over the floor. He was pretty scared of the whole thing at first, but got more comfortable while daddy held him on his lao in the chair. When we brought him out to the car he and Ron looked in the mirror together at their very short hair, and Miles was quite pleased with his look. I broke down crying, of course. He just looks so grown up. And very handsome. And he has a perfect little round head. I think he was born with more hair than he has right now!
We then went out as a family to have a scoop of ice cream. As the three of us sat there talking and sharing our flavors, it dawned on me that this would be the last time we would do something like this as a family of three. Again with the crying!
We are trying to organize lots of stuff before the new kid gets here, so we went to Ikea to get some storage containers for Miles’ room. We ate lunch there first. Miles had macaroni and cheese, but wanted to try my chicken. I shared several bites with him. While he was eating, Jessica asked me how the chicken was. I said, “It’s okay. A little dry–it’s all white breast meat.”
Miles chimed in, “I’m breastfeeding, too!”
Some new bike action!
Miles turned 3 today. We can’t believe how fast he’s growing up.
The day was great. A really sweet birthday ceremony at school. We rode home on the new bike, had a nice family dinner (pizza! cupcakes!) and played a little wii before bedtime. Photos here.
The video above is from his birthday party which we had a few days early. We celebrated at a little bakery called The Cookie Jar . Miles wanted a Pirate-themed party. The bakery set out 3 pirate-themed cookies per child and let them go crazy decorating them with all kinds of sugary sprinkles and stuff. We had red and black and white balloons and we gave out gold chocolate coins, a pirate rubber duckie, a collapsible spy glass and pirate stickers to each kid. Then we loaded the kids up even more with sugar with the pull-apart cupcake cake. It’ was a pirate ship and it said, “Shiver Me Timbers! Miles is 3!” Miles and 11 of his closest pals had a ball. In the video, the little guy sitting next to him at the head of the table is his best mate, Gabriel. It was a great party! Also seen in the video: Avery, Claudia, David, Ava, Ethan, Jude, Maria, Karis, Pearl and Ian.
