Super Sugar Bear

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

Last night I started wondering if our sugar-fascism with Miles is too much.

We were reading a counting book before bed. Each page has a number and a flap hiding that many whatevers.

me: 7…
miles: 7!
me: 7 what, buddy? (lifting flap)
miles: 7 snakes!
me: 8…
miles: 8!
me: 8 what, bear? (lifting flap)
miles: 8 beads!

The “beads” were donuts!

A couple of weeks ago we went to a birthday party. There was a piñata and Miles collected a little bag of candy and toys. We put the bag high on the counter and let him have a dum-dum a day if things were going well.

A few days in, he had a “mystery” flavored lollipop. Some time passed, I was preoccupied but then I suddenly noticed the Silence of Trouble. I skulked around the house until I found him in the kitchen, tiptoed on his stool, fiendishly rifling through the bag of candy on the counter.

it was very hard for me not to laugh. “Whatcha doing, buddy?” He shouted and I saw a flash of “Busted!” in his eyes, but then he crumpled his little face and looked down. He shook his head and said, “I not feel good, Daddy.”

Potty time

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

Miles is wearing underwear full time now (except for overnight and to poop). He’s been doing a great job. Just a couple pee pee incidents that are mostly our fault because we forget to remind him to go. We still aren’t pooping in the potty, but he tells us when he needs to go and we put on a diaper for a couple minutes while he do his binness. He says, “Excuse me. I need some privacy please!” and he goes in his room and closes the door or hides behind the couch. We are getting there.

I can’t wait till he is 12 and discovers that I have just shared his toileting schedule with the world. How is it that I love him so much that I find even his poop habits so adorable!?!?!?

More cute moments with M

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

We were all snuggling in bed this morning (Miles spent the whole night in his own bed!!): Me, Ron, Miles and Stuey. Stuey doesn’t usually let Miles get too close to him (past traumas with brooms and tail-pulling), but he was feeling extra-safe this morning. While petting Stuey, Miles said: “I love my Stuey. He’s my best friend. He’s my sister!”

We were riding in the car the other night and Ron mentioned to me that he finds meditation to be very relaxing. Miles piped up from his car seat: “I do meditation at school! Like this!” And with his palms up, fingers and thumb together, he let out a big “OMMMMMMMMMM….” Then he put his hand accross his belly and said “Breathe in! Breathe out! Breathe in! Breathe out!” His teachers, Jackie and Bonnie, have been leading meditation with the kids! We didn’t know this. Our 2.5 year old has apparently found more balance in his life than we have!

Sometimes Ron calls me “Big Mama” and “Sexy Mami” and a host of other nicknames. Miles seems to be picking up this behavior. This morning when I entered the room where Ron and Miles were reading, Miles looked up and said, “Hey, Sexy Mami!” Ron and I tried our hardest not to laugh too hard. I said, “How about ‘hey, Cutie Mami.’” To which Miles replied, “Hey Sexy, Cutie Mami!” I’m hoping I don’t receive a call from his school that he has sexually harrassed another 2 year old.

Lake Trip

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Miles and I took a trip to see our friends Tom, Gray and Cali in Durham, NC. Gray was headed off for a wedding and Jessica wanted some peace and quiet, so it was just the dads and the kids. Woo-hoo!

Cali is 4. She is extra cute, very sweet and affectionate. She was a great hostess to Miles, showing him around and sharing her stuff.

The weather could have been better, but we made the best of it. We stayed in a house on Lake Hyco and Tom brought his boat. He taught me how to drive it and I towed him around on a wakeboard. Then he towed me and the kids in a giant tube.

The young people got along very well. They had strawberry-rhubarb pie for breakfast. There was a great deal of snacking. We read stories together at bedtime.

I think Miles was a little scared of Tom. We don’t know why.

The flight home was delayed, so Miles didn’t get to nap and the plane ride was hard. We had a great trip, but we were very happy to get off the plane and into the car with Jessica!
